UPDATE August 3, 2016
We printed this article years ago warning about issues with Legionnaires disease carried in water supplies and tank water heaters. This article just came out from CNN, the Wall Street Journal and AOL:
“Legionnaires’ outbreak kills 4, sickens 67 others in the South Bronx”
“Mayor’s office: Seven dead in Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in New York”
CNN reports Legionnaires outbreak
As we reported many years ago one of the benefits of a tankless water heater for health. Tank water heaters can harbor bacteria including Legionnaires disease.”
Here are some highlights from the articles:
“Over the weekend a fourth person (now 7 and will go up) died of Legionnaires’ disease in the South Bronx and the number of reported infections in the borough since July 10 rose to 71. The disease, which is a form of pneumonia, is transmitted through airborne water droplets and often spreads through building water systems.”
“Legionnaires’ disease is a respiratory bacterial infection usually spread through mist that comes from a water source, such as cooling towers, air conditioning or SHOWERS. It is not transmitted person to person. Symptoms of the disease include fever, chills and a cough.”
We listed this article in 2009:

We are all getting health scares for different viruses and bacteria that we are exposed to in our lives.
You see on the news now of pandemic (outbreaks) of malaria and now the the swine and bird flu are all over the media so you can never be too careful. Although there is no evidence currently that this can be spread through a tank water heater there is evidence that certain bacteria can flourish in your standard tank water heater. As indicated not much is known about the spread of these viruses so you need to take precautions.
Legionella bacteria is found in the water supply of virtually every building at relatively low concentrations. Other bacteria, rust and sediment can and will accumulate in a standard tank model water heater. The bacteria only becomes potentially lethal when conditions favorable to it’s growth exist. Legionnaire’s Disease is a type of pneumonia that affects the lungs.
10,000 – 100,000 cases of Legionnaire’s disease occur in the U.S. each year. Alarmingly, 5% – 15% of these cases are fatal, mostly in smokers, the elderly and in those whose impaired immune systems make them susceptible to bacterial infections. The bacteria has been found to flourish in domestic water heating systems where temperatures are maintained at constant levels for extended periods of time.
The ideal temperature for the growth of this particular bacteria is 95 – 131 degrees F. The incubation period is 2 – 10 days. Interestingly enough, this is the temperature maintained in the typical home’s conventional tank water heater, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In other words, all the conditions that are necessary for the growth of this disease are present in the average conventional residential water heater’s tank.
Protect your loved ones!
Replacing your conventional water heater with the Titan Tankless Water Heater eliminates the conditions that breed this disease. The water is heated only once, as you use it. When no one is using hot water in your home, the temperature of the water in the pipes cools to less than the 95 – 131 degrees F necessary for the growth of the bacteria.
The temperature of the water is never maintained above 95 degrees for more than 15 – 20 minutes at a time, certainly not the 2 – 10 days required for the growth of the bacteria. Have you ever looked at what is at the bottom of your standard tankless water heater after just 2 years or use? You would be shocked at the sediment, rust and other unhealthy things that will accumulate there! Not with the Titan and you will have endless healthy hot water!

Since getting my Titan back in 2009 I have to say health was not really what attracted me. I use my shower off and on all day so needed that endless hot water and the storage savings was also nice.
I have to say that the health part seems great that I am reading. I really seem to notice my hair is softer after the tankless and was shocked to read tank water heaters contain rust and sediment at the bottom.
Its good to know you get health benefits from this product.
I was just reading about the recent meningitis scare and then read about how tank water heaters can have germs and other viruses germinating inside. It is nice and reassuring to know a Titan Tankless does not have that risk as it does not store water. Another good reason to go with these.
I read online where that disease Legionella is being found in tank water heaters. Is that true?
The odds of something like this occurring are slim in most situations but this is what we found online regarding Legionnella.

I recently replaced my tank water heater and when I drained it I found all kinds of slime and rust at the bottom that had accumulated over the years. I cant imagine having showered with that crap hitting my skin all these years. I was also reading about bacteria and other harmful things that can cause illness can occur in a tank that sits for a long time. I am glad I went tankless.
I did not realize about the importance of health with my tankless unit until the installation was done. When we drained the old tank we could sludge, rust and other nasty things so I was glad to get the Titan installed. I do notice my hair is softer and skin feels better but not sure if that was the tankless. This is just another reason why I went tankless and never looked back.
I am happy that I dont have to worry about running out of hot water also as well as saving energy. Thanks Titan
Our family has used a Titan for many years and I am sold. I saw they now have digital models that appear to be upgraded as my model has a dial on it to make adjustments.
Is this an upgrade I should consider? I bought mine in 2007.
The digital models from Titan have many upgrades according to them that go beyond the older models.
In our opinion you are fine with what you have and do not need to upgrade if you are satisfied with your current set up.
